Lynda Murray’s Mosaic Triangle- 8.30pm

(The Street Cafe Bar and Hastings Jazz Club) as well as organising a two day jazz festival that featured Julian Joseph, Toni Kofi, Liam Noble and Winston Clifford among other notable Uk jazz scene musicians. For more than 30 years Lynda has played in local music venues this includes Jazz Breakfasts at St Mary In The Castle and about 20 years ago with Paul Whitten in the band, they played the opening set for Courtney Pine at the De La Warr Pavilion. Lynda was commissioned to write a piece of music for the first ever Coastal Currents event, played in the first St Leonards Festival, and played in Hasting’s first ever Seafood and Wine Festival. Lynda plays mainly modern jazz, and her own compositions. She is inspired and influenced by Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Lee Konitz and Miles Davis. She says it’s wonderful to welcome Paul Whiten, notably "the best jazz bassist in the South of England" by promoters of the Swanage Jazz Festival. ‘I can only agree. He is the best bass player that I have worked with and I am so pleased to announce that he is a permanent member of Mosaic Triangle. We have played together on and off for more than 22 years.’ In the 70’s Paul was a double bass major at the Guildhall School of Music and most notable for him studied jazz harmony with Lionel Grigson. In his early years as a professional musician Paul’s bass playing took him around the world and the most memorable time for him was in Paris regulary playing in Chet Baker’s quartet. Yair Katz is the third permanent member of Mosaic Triangle and Lynda has bee playing with him for about two years. He is a popular local drummer/percussionist and works in a variety of bands playing either kit drum or African percussion. He has an MA in World Music and also works as a music therapist.

2025 has been a good year for Lynda playing with Mosaic Triangle and her piano trio. She played at the opening reception for M&G Investments new building in the City as well as being part of their ‘Reframing Later Life’ project. St Clements Church during Old Town Week and two recitals at St James Church Piccadilly London with her piano trio.

Band leader Lynda has been living in Hastings since 1986 and has been playing in Hastings venues with a variety of jazz bands since then. She has a great sound and writes beautiful melodies. Lynda formed Mosaic Triangle in 2023 to perform her compositions with bass, drums and sax. They have played the Sanctuary Festival, Rye Jazz Festival, Hidden Beach Festival, Waves Unplugged and many gigs at Barnaby’s.

Lynda started playing sax while studding classical piano at music college in 1980. After music college she joined London’s first Community Music Project set up by John Stevens and Jazz Services London. During the early 2000’s Lynda set up two jazz clubs, The Street at the Street Cafe and Hasting Jazz Club at the White Rock Hotel.

She managed the Jazz Club for 3 years and ran a two day jazz festival that included Julian Joseph, Tony Kofi, the late Harry Beckett, Liam Noble and Juliet Kelly. The jazz club also played host to such notable musicians as Alan Barnes, Gilad Atzmon, Annie Whitehead, Liam Genockey, Ian Shaw, Winston Clifford, Paul Whitten and Steve Lodder. When the recession hit in 2008 the club folded due to the loss of the venue.

Paul Whitten – double bass. Is one of the best double bass players in the South East and a popular sideman. His playing partnership with Lynda spans more than twenty years. Paul studied double bass at the Guildhall School of music and his early years as a professional musician Paul and his bass travelled the world. The most memorable time for him was in Paris when he regularly played in the Chet Baker Quartet.

Yair Katz – drums/percussion. Is a registered music therapist and a multi-instrumentalist and has performed in international festivals in NZ and Australia including several Womad Festivals. Yair brings world music influences to this trio and a love of improvisation. He also runs very popular percussion workshops at festivals.
