Before Hollywood, before the talkies, and before cinema had worked out any of its rules, there was a wonderfully inventive new medium finding its feet.

Join us at Barnaby’s Lounge for the first in our new monthly film screenings, taking place on the second Monday of every month.

For our opening evening, Silence is Golden: 1895–1910, host Mark Poole takes us right back to the birth of cinema with a specially selected collection of short films from its extraordinary first fifteen years.

Mark will introduce each film, offering context and stories from the earliest days of filmmaking, followed by an opportunity for questions and conversation. Whether you’re a devoted cinephile or simply curious about what audiences were watching more than a century ago, no specialist knowledge is required.
